About Lincoln South
The Lincoln South project is being developed by Carter Group, which has successfully developed Hyde Park (Avonhead) and Regents Park (Casebrook) subdivisions in Christchurch, IPort Business Park in Rolleston and The Crossing retail development in central Christchurch.
The Springs Homestead and surrounding farm has been the home of the Greenslade family for three generations. Current owners John and Leslie Greenslade raised their four children in the Springs Homestead and have always been open with the family that one day they would sell the farm.
In 2020 the Carter Group approached the Greenslades to ask if they would consider selling their land to enable a new subdivision. The Greenslades thought about the offer, and after consulting with advisors and their children, they decided to sell their land to the Carter Group — but keep the Springs Homestead.
Leslie says John didn’t know he wanted to retire from dairy farming until he actually thought about it.
“Once we thought about it and met Tim Carter and understood his vision for our land, we were very comfortable working with him. The fact that Tim and his family are Canterbury-based and long-term developers sealed the deal.”
John says there is a lot of his family’s history on this land, “I think this development is going to be very special.”
“Another reason we agreed to sell to the Carter Group is that we are now surrounded by subdivisions. Only two and a half metres from our boundary new homes will be built, as well as the walkway for one of the new subdivisions. Over the road to the south we are surrounded by lifestyle blocks. We are a bit sandwiched. It makes sense for our land to become a subdivision.”
John also says that the land has been a really tough farm to work and maximise returns.
“With the residential subdivision encroaching on our land, it makes farming even harder than it has been.
“People living in the new homes don’t realise and accept normal farm operations – this might be fertiliser spreading, or our cows making too much noise.
“We have been able to make a living, but we have worked very hard and are actually very happy to retire.”
John and Leslie have no plans to leave the Springs Homestead and look forward to the subdivision developing.
Council application
The Carter Group applied to the Selwyn District Council for a plan change to rezone rural land bordering existing subdivisions on the south side of the Lincoln township. This would enable the development of up to 1,710 residential sections of varying sizes. On 8 June 2022 the Council accepted the commissioner’s recommendation to rezone the Lincoln South development.
Consultation
Carter Group wants to hear from the local community and get their feedback on this development, both positive and negative, to ensure the community’s wishes are taken into account in the development plans. It is important to Carter Group that the character and country feel of Lincoln is maintained and enhanced. This is a long-term master plan development and the time to provide feedback is now.
